A Thanksgiving Reflection: Thank You to the Scientists and Researchers
Families Fighting Flu Chief Operations Officer Serese Marotta reflects on the Thanksgiving season.
Before I lost my sweet 5-year-old boy Joseph to the flu in 2009, I only knew enough about the virus to know that we should be vaccinated. Did I think the flu killed healthy children and adults? Absolutely not. I did not know that some children and even otherwise healthy adults die from flu each year.
At Families Fighting Flu, I represent just one of the many families who has lost someone, or nearly lost someone to the flu. We share our stories because we want everyone to know that there is a proven way to help protect your family from the flu – vaccination.
This Thanksgiving season, we are taking a moment to reflect and be grateful for the scientists and researchers who work hard each year to produce the best vaccine possible for the upcoming flu season. It’s challenging work—the flu virus is good at constantly changing and so the researchers have to innovate to try to stay a step ahead of it.
This year, more than ever, we have all seen how a virus can become deadly without a vaccine to help fight against it. Perhaps a flu shot did not seem that important before. Now, I hope we all recognize just how important vaccinating against viruses like flu really is.
In honor of my son and all the families who share their stories, and in recognition of the dedication of countless scientists and researchers advancing vaccine development, get yourself and your loved ones their flu vaccination today!
